The Department of Earth Sciences would like to say congratulations to all the graduates during the Spring 2022 convocation. The Faculty and Staff want to celebrate our graduating students for all their hard work over the past 4+ years and wish them well in their future careers. The Department would like all our graduating students (some are listed below) to know that as you transition into your alumni status from Carleton, that the Staff and Faculty in the Department of Earth Sciences are still here to support you. Please continue to use us as a resource and keep in touch, letting us know all the amazing things you're working on.

The Department would like to congratulate Beth McLarty-Halfkenny on assuming the role of President of the Canadian Federation of Earth Sciences (CFES) this past April 2022. Beth has served on the CFES Board of Directors since 2018, as Outreach Director and President-Elect. She hopes to elevate Earth Science education and geoscience communication during the coming year, supporting the efforts of Member Organizations in improving the perception of geoscience for the public good, essential for building a sustainable future.

Fateme Hormozzade Ghalati, who is currently a working on her PhD in Earth Sciences at Carleton University, as won the Geothermal Canada Student Scholarship Award. This award recognizes the "Best student research project that will advance understanding of geothermal resources or resource production based at a Canadian institution". The winners were officially announced at the 2022 Geothermal Canada AGM that took place on June 21, 2022.

PhD students Dana Korneisel and Misha Whittingham, in the Maddin lab at Carleton University, have both received Student Research Grants from the Geological Society of America (GSA).  

PhD students Dana Korneisel has received the Cohen Award from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. The awards will be announced at their annual conference November 3rd-8th, 2022. The Steven Cohen Award for Student Research is to foster excellent student research in the study of vertebrate paleontology by making funds available to an exemplary student or students. Jade Atkins has joined the amazing team at the Joggins Fossil Centre as its new Director/Curator. The Joggins Fossil Cliffs is a UNESCO World Heritage Site along the coast of Nova Scotia that has been described as the "coal age Galápagos" due to their wealth of fossils from the Carboniferous period (354 to 290 million years ago). The rocks of this site are considered to be iconic for this period of the history of Earth and are the world's thickest and most comprehensive record of the Pennsylvanian strata. At Joggins, Jade hopes to continue to study the evolution and development of amphibians, as well as broaden her research horizons in new directions.
