We can learn a lot about climate change from Venus, our sister planet. Venus currently has a surface temperature of 450℃ (the temperature of an oven’s self-cleaning cycle) and an atmosphere dominated by carbon dioxide (96 per cent) with a density 90 times that of Earth’s.

For the second year in a row, Dr. Geoff Pignotta has been honoured with a nomination as a 2020-2021 Favourite Faculty Member by the students in Residence at Carleton University. Students are asked to submit a nomination form for the overall favourite Faculty member. The survey simply states: Who is the faculty member and why are they so great?

Mat Roloson, who is a Masters student in Earth Sciences is trying to solve a paleontological mystery dating back more than 66 million year.

Geoff Pignotta, Lab coordinator and Teaching instructor in the Department of Earth Sciences, has won the Faculty of Science award for Teaching Excellence. The Faculty of Science recognizes excellence within our own Faculty which is separate from the University Awards. 

Freya George, who is a former Earth Science Phd student under the supervision of Fred Gaidies, has received the Mike Brown Early Career Research Paper Prize from the Journal of Metamorphic Geology. 

Current undergraduate student, Kaitlyn de Moree van Lierde, has won the 2021 GAC-PDAC Logan Student Prize.  This award supports the career and academic advancement of geoscience students. 

Dr. Michael Ryan, Adjunct research professor in Earth Sciences, and his former Earth Sciences MSc student Dr. James Campbell recently published the description of a new Late Cretaceous marine reptile from the Dinosaur Park Formation of southern Alberta in the journal PeerJ.
