Trystan
Trystan Warnock-Juteau
Upon arriving at Carleton four years ago Trystan was faced with a lot of changes–a new school, a new city, and a new field of study. He stands here today with a diploma in hand and a wealth of experience that has helped him grow as a student and as a budding paleontologist. Above all else, Carleton provided Trystan with numerous opportunities to immerse himself in his field beyond the baseline requirements for his degree. Through the Earth Sciences department he was able to contribute to important scientific research (on dinosaurs!), visit a museum collection in the badlands of Alberta, and present some of his research at scientific conferences in Toronto and Ottawa. Trystan’s time at Carleton was instrumental in helping him develop his skills and confidence as a researcher. Trystan is excited to begin his master’s in the fall in the Earth Science Department at Carleton University.

Trystan is graduating with High Distinction with his Bachelor of Science with a major in Earth Science and concentration in Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoecology. He also received a Senate Medal for Outstanding Academic Achievement, placing him in the top 3% of the graduating class.

Mark Flesch
Returning to school as a mature student was a bit daunting at first, but now Mark is honoured to be a graduate of the Earth Sciences program at Carleton University. During his time on campus, his passion for our planet and its environment was re-ignited. Mark learned so much about geologic time, geochemical processes, relationships between rock types and the events that form them.
Primarily, the experience and tools he acquired at Carleton have enabled him to research the environmental effects of mine waste. In the years to come, he hopes to continue his education as a graduate student, and contribute his skills to environmental protection in the mining industry.

Mark’s message to future students: You’re going to come across some of the most colourful and generous people you’ll ever meet while studying Earth Sciences at Carleton, so don’t be shy. Connecting with other students and helping each other understand certain concepts is an enjoyable and invaluable resource (did I mention you should join GeoSoc!?). Finally, if something in particular sparks your interest (physics, chemistry, biology, economy etc.) find the geologic equivalent and learn as much as you can.

Mark is graduating with with High Distinction with his Bachelor of Science Honours in Earth Sciences.
