Dr. Claire Samson

I am a professional engineer with a B.A.Sc. in engineering physics from Laval University (1983), a M.Sc. in geological sciences from McGill University (1985), and a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Toronto (1991).

I joined academia after working several years in industry as an exploration seismologist and an aerospace engineering analyst. I was appointed at Carleton University in 2003, where I served as Chair of the Dept. of Earth Sciences (2010-13) and Associate Dean (Planning) in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs (2015-17).  

Since 2018, I am Dean of Research at École de technologie supérieure in Montréal. Although my primary focus is academic leadership, I remain an active researcher. I am pleased to keep strong links with Carleton University as an Adjunct Research Professor. My current interests include using unmanned aircraft systems for magnetic surveying and 3D imaging of rock walls for automatic geological mapping. I am also using geophysical methods to characterize meteorites and planetary analogues.
