Overview
Every cohort of graduate students engage in exciting field-based courses and field trips as part of their education in earth sciences at Carleton. We want to help support the students’ travel costs.
The K. Sethu Raman Endowment for Field Education in Earth Sciences was established in 2018 by Dr. Raman, with contributions from Carleton University and the Department of Earth Sciences. The purpose of this fund is to support both domestic and international travel for field courses for graduate students. The endowment stands at $358,000 - now we are trying to increase the endowment. This Giving Tuesday–December 3–gifts can be enhanced by participating in Futurefunder Challenges!
Awards are made from the annual interest on the endowment — this year ~ $9,000 from the K. Sethu Raman Endowment for Field Education was awarded to help subsidize the travel costs of six graduate students during 2024. Students participated in field courses to Hawaii and the Swiss Alps, as well as field trips to the Sudbury area. Every year, in perpetuity, the K. Sethu Raman Endowment for Field Education will help graduate students gain advanced field experience.
Our graduate students commonly enrol in field courses to parts of the world that provide key training events in their education. We want to help support the travel costs associated with these field training opportunities, especially in this time of rapidly escalating travel costs. This fund is the department’s sole source of financial support for graduate student travel for field courses. We plan a new initiative that would have funds from the K. Sethu Raman Endowment used to subsidize a field trip for new graduate students to familiarize them with eastern Ontario geology and provide a bonding experience for our incoming graduate cohort.
Now we are trying to increase the fund. Our goal is to increase the principal every year - now we are trying to increase the fund by $10,000. Increases in the endowment directly translate into travel support for an additional student every year. On Giving Tuesday (December 3rd), Carleton University will be adding to donated funds through a number of Challenges. That means that your gift on Giving Tuesday can have an even greater impact! Your support will help Earth Sciences students connect their academic passions with meaningful field-based experiences.
