Get ready for an astronomical series of talks at Carleton University, hosted by the Faculty of Science and Department of Physics! On April 8th, the Moon eclipses the Sun, creating a total solar eclipse. While Ottawa won’t experience the full totality, we’re turning this cosmic spectacle into a celebration of science!
The afternoon will be dedicated to exploring the wonders of our universe. Delve into captivating talks on the cosmos, our solar system, the Sun, the Big Bang, and the marvels of our own planet. Weather permitting, get a close-up view of the Sun through a solar telescope, adding a hands-on element to this stellar event.
Dr. Hanika Rizo, Associate Professor of Geology, Department of Earth Sciences at Carleton University will be one of the speakers at this event.
Leading a dedicated research group, Dr. Rizo focuses on addressing fundamental questions in planetary sciences. Their inquiries include the formation and evolution of planets, the timing and process of Earth’s differentiation into a metallic core and a silicate rocky mantle, and the stabilization of continents along with the emergence of life. To accomplish these objectives, Dr. Rizo’s team has pioneered mass spectrometry procedures. These techniques enable the identification of isotopic variations resulting from extinct radioactivities with increasing precision, offering valuable insights into planetary processes and early Earth’s geological history.

Yue Zhang, Assistant Professor of theoretical Physics, Department of Physics, Carleton University
Dr. Zhang obtained his PhD in theoretical physics from Peking University in 2009 and spent 2007-2009 as a visiting graduate student at University of Maryland College Park. Afterwards, he held postdoctoral research positions at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste Italy (2009-2012), California Institute of Technology (2013-2016), Northwestern University and Fermilab (2016-2019), before joining the Faculty of Science at Carleton University.
Nadia Bozak, Associate Professor, Department of English, Carleton University
Dr. Bozak coordinates the Creative Writing Concentration for the Department of English. Additionally, her creative and scholarly work focuses on climate change, sustainability, and how storytelling and visual culture, cinema in particular, are informed by the extraction of raw resources and patterns of consumption. Dr. Bozak’s most recent essay on photography in the age of climate crisis appeared in Il Giornale Dell’Arte.
