Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 Contract Instruction Positions

The Department of Earth Sciences is seeking contract instructors for the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 semesters for the courses listed below.

A note to all applicants: As per Articles 16.3 and 16.4 in the CUPE 4600 (Unit 2) Collective Agreement, the posted vacancies listed are first offered to applicants meeting the incumbency criterion. Undergraduate Courses

ERTH 2401 Dinosaurs - Fall Term 2024 - Lecture-Hybrid

A general introduction to dinosaurs, their place in evolution, their social behaviour, the Mesozoic landscape and extinction theories.

Minimum Requirements:  The minimum requirement for this position is a PhD in Biology or Earth Sciences with a specialization in Vertebrate Paleontology.  The candidate must have previous teaching experience in Vertebrate Paleontology at the university level.
 

ERTH 2421 A Geological Tour of the National Parks of North America - Fall Term 2024 - in person 

An introduction to the geology of North America's National parks, the ultimate awe-inspiring educational experience, and how these parks collectively tell the story of the processes that have shaped the continent.

Minimum requirements:  The minimum requirement for qualified applicants applying to teach ERTH 2421 “A Geological Tour of the National Parks of North America” is normally a M.Sc. degree with expertise in the subject area and previous teaching experience. 
 

ERTH 3113 Geology of Human Origins - Fall Term 2024 - in person 

The origin and evolution of our species from geological, biological and cultural perspectives. The course traces human ancestry from our primate roots through time and changing environments, and explores controversies, frauds, and misperceptions.

Minimum requirements:  The minimum requirement for qualified applicants applying to teach ERTH 3113 “Geology of Human Origins” is normally a M.Sc. degree with expertise in the subject area and previous teaching experience. 
 

ERTH 2012 Planet Hollywood - Winter Term 2025 - Lecture-Hybrid, filmings in person 

Earth Science concepts and content portrayed in Hollywood films are sometimes accurate but more frequently misrepresented. This course will examine popular Hollywood films to critically evaluate the Earth Science concepts and content that they present and directly compare them to the actual science.

Minimum requirements:  The minimum requirement for this position is a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences with a specialization in physical geology, including igneous petrology, metamorphic petrology and structural geology. This is a blended course with delivery of web based online content coupled with evening film screenings. Practical experience developing and delivering online content via cuLearn, using Lightboard, student response systems (Poll Everywhere) and video editing experience are required. Previous teaching experience in introductory physical geology required. Knowledge of US geology including their national parks is an asset.
 

ERTH 2312 Paleontology - Winter Term 2025 - in person

Introduction to macrofossil and microfossil groups, their paleoenvironmental significance, and principles of evolutionary paleoecology.

Minimum requirements:  The minimum requirement for this position is a PhD in Earth Sciences with a specialization in paleontology.  The planned mode of delivery for this course will include in-person labs. 
 

ERTH 2404 Engineering Geoscience - Winter 2025 - in person 

Applications of the basic concepts of geology, earth materials and earth processes to practical engineering and environmental science. Topics include rock and soil mechanics, slope stability, hydrogeology, geological hazards, and site investigations. Overview of related geophysical methods.

Minimum requirements:  The minimum requirement for qualified applicants applying to teach ERTH 2404, “Engineering Geoscience:” is a Ph.D. in science or engineering, expertise in the subject area and previous teaching experience. The planned mode of delivery for this course will include in-person labs
 

ERTH 2406 Geology and Map Interpretation - Winter Term 2025 - in person

Analysis and interpretation of geological features and processes using rocks, maps and cross sections. Introduction to computational methods.

Minimum requirements:  The minimum requirement for this position is a PhD in Earth Sciences with a specialization in geological mapping, petrology, structural geology and mineral deposits.  This course serves as the preparation for Field School.  The planned mode of delivery for this course will include in-person labs.
 

ERTH 2802 - Field Geology I - Winter Term 2025 - in person

Field analysis using geological, geophysical and computational methods leading to the interpretation of the origins of geological features and processes.

Minimum requirements:  The minimum requirements for qualified applicants applying to teach ERTH 2802 “Field Geology” are a Ph.D. degree in a related discipline; expertise working in polydeformed metamorphic rocks; significant field mapping experience in a wide range of geologic settings; experience supervising employees in remote field locations;  expertise in ArcGIS or an equivalent geographic information system program; and, previous teaching experience in field mapping, structural geology, computers and geology, and economic geology.
