Four Carleton University Earth Science undergraduate students working with Dr. Richard Ernst and Dr. Hafida El Bilali, presented at the 12th Annual Moscow Solar System Symposium on the results of their detailed geological mapping on Venus:

The Department of Earth Sciences would like to say congratulations to all of the graduates during this Fall 2021 convocation. While we may not be on campus for the usual ceremonies this month, the faculty and staff want to celebrate our graduating students and wish them well in their future careers. 

The Howard Street Robinson Medal recognizes a respected and well-spoken geoscientist who will further the scientific study of Precambrian Geology and/or Metal Mining through a presentation of a distinguished lecture across Canada.

Carleton University Department of Earth Sciences Adjunct Research Professor, Dr. Michael Ryan, has published on a new Jurassic-aged crocodile relative in the journal Royal Society Open Science.

Dr. Fred Gaidies and current PhD student Thereza Yogi, Carleton alumni Olivier Heldwein and Dr. Jamie Cutts, as well as colleagues from UBC (Vancouver) and the University of Vienna publish their latest research on the metamorphic evolution of the Caledonian mountain belt in Arctic Norway. The Caledonides formed in the Paleozoic when the lapetus Ocean closed during the convergence and collision of Laurentia, Avalonia and Baltica.

Dr. James Mungall and Zhuosen Yao have published an article in Nature Communications entitled: Magnetite layer formation in the Bushveld Complex of South Africa.

The Carleton University Geology Society (GeoSoc), which is a student society, in collaboration with the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) are hosting the Geoscience Career Speaker Series: Forge your own path!

The Department will be having an exciting guest speaker on March 10th, 2022.  Robert Thirsk, a former Canadian Space Agency astronaut will be virtually attending the ERTH 2419-On the Origin of the Planets course to answer student questions and share his experiences with space exploration.
