A major earthquake could hit Ottawa. Are we prepared?

Thursday, April 27, 2017

On 24 April 2017, the Ottawa Citizen featured an very interesting article, written by Tom Spears, on a potential major earthquake hitting Ottawa and how society prepares for it.

The article features comments from an alumna of our department, Kate Ploeger (M.Sc. 2008, co-supervised by Dr. Gail Atkison and Dr. Claire Samson). It also mentions the current research linking paleoearthquakes and disturbed lake-bottom sediments done by Amin Esmaeilzadeh,  Dr. Samson and Dr. Gregory Brooks of Natural Resources Canada. Amin will present his results as a poster at the annual meeting of the Canadian Geophysical Union next month. You can read his abstract here
