Scientist in Residence Dr. Richard Ernst was a Keynote Speaker for Target 2017: Innovating Now for Our Future (April 19-21 in Perth, Australia). In fact, his presentation was the first in the program! Dr. Ernst spoke on "Multi-commodity, multi-scale exploration targeting using the large igneous province record”. This talk fit the theme of the conference, which was to contribute to “shaping tomorrow’s exploration strategies for the future sustainability of our industry.”

This conference was impressive for the quality and range of innovative, exploration-related topics addressed. The attendance was diverse, with representation from industry, government and academia, mainly from Australia.

During this visit to Perth, Dr. Ernst also gave presentations at a number of mining company offices: BHP Billiton, First Quantum Minerals, Rio Tinto and Teck. He also met with representatives of several other companies. Throughout this short 10 day visit to Australia, he found that there is greater interest in the role of Large Igneous Provinces (LIP) as an exploration targeting tool. There is increased likelihood of major industry funding for a new multi-year LIPs research program.
