Dr. Richard Ernst

Monday was an important day for Scientist-in-Residence Dr. Richard Ernst. The prestigious Nature Geoscience journal released an article, entitled "Long-lived connection between southern Siberia and northern Laurentia in the Proterozoic.”, for which he is the lead author. This paper provides evidence that southern Siberia, near Lake Baikal, was attached to ancient North America for a period of one billion years. These findings are highly significant to mining and hydrocarbon exploration.

Much of the research done for this article happened right in Siberia. Dr. Ernst travels fairly regularly to the region around Lake Baikal for research. He will be returning there tomorrow. As always, his schedule while he is in Russia and Siberia is quite full. Among other engagements, he and a colleague will be meeting with senior staff at Russia's large diamond mining company ALROSA. On the agenda is how the dating of Siberian Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) can facilitate their task of diamond exploration.
